New poster released: The National

3-color, all hand screenprinted silkscreen poster for The National. (Click for more info or to purchase.)

Alright! Brand new poster release here for the amazing band The National, as you can see from above.

And, we finally were able to catch them live. And dudes, their reputation is not only solid gold, but it perfectly earned and well deserved.

We arrived at the show early in order to get our posters to the merch table ASAP, and then it was time to relax outside of the beautiful Carnegie Library of Homestead Music Hall grounds in Homestead with a glass of wine and a lovely fall night gathering on the hill. It was pretty spectacular. And things only got better as we met up with our super friends Sarah & Scott from The Wreckids. Sarah had toured with The National in a past band (Boxstep) and invited us to hang out with her & the guys in The National after the show. Rock star sweetpeas, that’s all I can say about the end of the evening. HUGE thanks to The National for the amazing show, the hospitality backstage afterwards and the giggles.

Info about this new poster for The National, with Owen Pallett:

All hand screenprinted poster for their September 25, 2010 show at The Carnegie Music Hall, in Homestead, Pittsburgh, PA. Now available here at my website and here in my Etsy shop.

Etheral & earthbound, all at once. That’s sort of the charm of the amazing band The National. We love this band, and we’re thrilled to be working with them again too on a poster for our hometown, Pittsburgh.

This is our hand screenprinted, limited edition silkscreen poster for The National with dark sky blue, dark yellow and light blue hand mixed inks. Edition of 150, signed and numbered (by me, strawberryluna). Size: 16 x22 inches (39.4 cm x 55.9 cm.) Paper: archival Cougar, White 100lb cover weight.

This poster was sold at the show and on tour with the band, and I have just a small number for sale, so they will go quick. Now available at my website here. I design & hand screenprint my prints and posters. If you have any questions, just let me know.

Here are some quick process shots, too, with more & nicer ones to come soon in my Flickr account.

Phoenix’s magical Blogotheque Take-Away Show

Click to watch Phoenix play live, outdoors in Paris.

Un, duex, trois, quatre!

It’s not secret that I love the band Phoenix, (they’re the best) nor the fantastic paris based music blog La Blogotheque and their signature Les Concerts A Emporter, or Take-Away Shows. If you are not familiar, the basic premise is always the same, where French filmmaker Vincent Moon asks a band to play a short set, often consisting of just 2-3 songs, at an impromptu and outdoor location, usually accoutically, while he films the moment.

The Take-Away Shows are often really lovely and intimate, almost always with small surprises and little treats that can only happen with the unplanned & gentle collision of a band suddenly playing live in public spaces not typically made for such moments.

Click to watch Phoenix play live, outdoors in Paris.

A perfect case in point are the most recent 4 songs on La Blogotheque featuring the French band Phoenix, (who sing just about exclusively in English), and are perhaps better known outside of their home country than withing their native France.

In this heart melting set of 4 songs for Take-Away Shows (or more rightly Les Concerts A Emporter), quite possibly my favorite band Phoenix performs  1901 at Trocedero Square, close to the Eiffel Tower, with lots of passersby simply stopping to get an ear and eyeful of the band. There’s even a freshly married couple among the gathering crowd, and it simply couldn’t be more romantic.

Phoenix then moves onto a crowded Parisian tour bus, taking seats at the back of the open upper deck and play 2 songs (Lisztomania & One Time Too Many) while the bus and it’s happily surprised tourists take a ride through Paris streets. The final show is Long Distance Call, played beautifully under a stone bridge along the Seine, complete with a sweet echos from the pigeon encrusted columns of the bridge. My favorite band + my favorite city = I’m done for.

Basically, it’s all awesome and you should watch ’em all. Click the images above or here to watch & listen as well as read a bit more about each performance. Phoenix!

Lovely new Jason Lytle live NPR set

Let’s get this truth out of the way first: I love Jason Lytle. Unabashedly and completely. What’s not to adore? His songwriting is orignal and fantastic, he’s a funny assed dude, and a sweetpea. He is just super dupes.

We got to see Jason Lytle play a live set as the opening act for Neko Case while touring in support of his first and incredibly good solo record (Yours Truly, The Commuter) this summer at possibly the weirdest venue that Pittsburgh has yet managed to pull out of thin air: a swampy downslope on the Monongahela River next to a water slide park. It was a warm and muggy night full of folding chairs, teenaged ushers with no real idea where one’s seat were, and the slow roll of Jason Lytle‘s music weaving magic. I can’t say it was ideal, but it was perfect, if you get me. Thanks for being so nice too after the show sir, I love my poster and doodley postcards.

With all of the work and travel that I’ve done in September this year, I’m a little behind on some things, and this NPR’s excellent All Songs Considered recorded show of Mr. Lytle’s at The Bowery Ballroom in NYC this past July, but posted by All Songs Considered on 7/11/09 is one of them. Just listen and fall in love.

You can listen and stream or download his set here or click on the photo below.

New poster released: The Decemberists

Hand screenprinted 3-color poster for The Decemberists show on 8/14/09 at The Byham Theater in Pittsburgh, PA

Hand screenprinted 3-color poster for The Decemberists show on 8/14/09 at The Byham Theater in Pittsburgh, PA

No surprise, I love, love The Decemberists, they work the lovely and dark into a thing of beauty and complexity so well, so deftly. We’re really pleased and excited to be working with them once again for this poster.

This poster is my all hand screenprinted ode to The Decemberists “The Rake Song”. It’s a 3-color print with bright & shiny metallic gold, midnight black and rusty pink inks. Edition of just 110. Size: 16w x 22h inches. Paper: acid-free & archival Cougar 100 lb White, cover weight. Available on my website here.

Their show in Pittsburgh last night was fantastic, exceeding even the rumors we’d heard and expectations set up from tales of previous nights’ shows on tour. Playing “The Hazards of Love” from start to brutal finish, kicking much ass with a killer rendition of Heart’s “Crazy”, and giving a magical reenactment of “The Battle Of Fort Pitt” by The Decemberists Family Players, we were spellbound. And now I’m even further in love. Thank you for the magic. And thanks again for signing a copy of your poster for us too!

Au Revoir Simone, live on KEXP

Au Revoir Simone play live at Seattle's KEXP (photo by Dan Shultz)

Au Revoir Simone play live at Seattle's KEXP (photo by Dan Shultz)

As a bit of an NPR junkie, you might be able to imagine that the musical offshoot, NPR Music’s All Song Considered is an even bigger addiction for me. If you are not familiar with it, come on, climb out from underneath that rock friend.

As a designer, I’m always interested in how things are put together, and more specifically as a rock poster designer, well, of course I listen to what is likely an ungodly amount of music, all day, and sometimes all night long. So the gigantic culling breadth of All Song Considered and it’s amazing way of finding and showcasing music, bands and process makes it just about one of my favorite stops to park on the web.

A recent addition to All Song’s Considered’s list of Studio Sessions site is this live show by the Brooklyn-based band Au Revoir Simone at the KEXP studios in Seattle, WA. Being fans of both the incredible work of KEXP and Au Revoir Simone for quite some time now, it was one of those “Awww yay!” moments when I came across it.

More photos from Au Revoir Simone‘s live session at KEXP are here on KEXP’s Flickr page.

Hope that you dig it too!
